Featured Article – Some thoughts from Psalm 139

1 O Lord, you have searched me and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;

you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down;

you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue

you know it completely, O Lord.

In just these first four verses of this Psalm are some truly

powerful words.  These words tell us of a God in all of his

greatness knows everything about each of us.  It shows a God

who cares for his people unconditionally.

God is never too busy.  We are never unimportant.  The God of

the entire universe has time to search and know each person

individually.  He doesn’t proportion some of his time to one

person and then some to another.  His almighty power is

sufficient for all of his people all the time.

A close friend recently has been experiencing tremendous pressure

at work.  It’s gotten to the point where she is not eating

properly and cannot sleep.  As I am not a counselor, I can only

listen and give her feedback.  I advised her to speak to her

manager as difficult at that may be.  The problems were not hers

personally, management had to get involved and make decisions

and adjustments.  She promised me she would do that.  Although

my friend prays occasionally, she doesn’t feel that God listens

to her or answers her prayers.  I shared this passage with her

and assured her that God knows everything about her situation and

certainly does listen.  God always answers our prayers and

sometimes we just have to be still, wait on him and listen.

God will speak to us through the Holy Spirit who dwells

within us.  Each of us have a conscience, that inner being that

constantly guides us.  God speaks to us through our conscience.

God searches for you and he knows you.  You are never alone.

Doesn’t this tell us how important we are to him.  In order for

us to get to know someone we have to spend considerable time

with that person.  How can we truly know someone who we just

see and speak to them occasionally? The God I know is personal,

wants to be with me, searches for me.  He wants a relationship

with each of us.

Even though we know our families and friends extremely well, we

are limited in this knowledge.  God knows when we sit and when

we rise, when we go out and when we lay down.  This tells us

that he is always present.  I assured my friend that God will

never leave or forsake her and to continue to pray.  I’ll also

continue to pray on her behalf.  That’s the beauty of prayer.

We can intercede for others to ask God to reveal himself, to

bless our friends, to strengthen our faith in order to be there

when they need us.

Even before we speak, God knows what we are about to say.  So he

knows our concerns.  He knows when the pressure of life becomes

too much and we are about to lash out in words.  He knows when

the job is getting us down and seems too hard to bear.  God

concerns himself with all of our troubles and is always with us.

You may be in a similar situation as my friend or know someone

who is.  I encourage you to pray with them and for them, but

most of all share this passage with them.  Let them know how

important they are to the magnificent God of the universe.

Let them know of his boundless love for them and may the

peace that only God can give, be always with you and those

you love.
